IOM SPORTS AWARDS 2018

Clive McGreal receives nomination for Veteran Sportsperson of the Year 2018.

Following a reasonably successful Commonwealth Games performance last April when local bowlers Clive alongside son Mark became the first male competitors to represent the Island in the sport of Lawn Bowls, Clive has since had a stellar period in his playing career. Firstly winning the National Outdoor Singles Title for the 4th consecutive year and picking up the National Pairs title for the 7th occasion in 8 years. Added to these were the inaugural National Triples and Fours titles alongside his playing partners. In November Clive competed at the World Champion of Champions Singles Event (again in Australia) and produced his finest performance to date to qualify for the knock out stages finishing in 5th place overall, narrowly missing out on a medal , but placed as the best Northern Hemisphere male competitor. With the winter indoor bowls scene drawing to a close Clive can also look back on a successful season winning both the Indoor National Singles and Pairs titles (again partnered by Mark) and as part of Team Dragons taking a clean sweep of the Premier Pairs and Premier Team leagues by a comfortable margin. Shared success in the team victory also go to sons Mark and Michael together with Gary Lee.

Overall Clive has had a memorable year and is the first bowler to hold both indoor and outdoor National Singles and Pairs titles at the same time, perhaps even the more remarkable having undergone a full hip replacement operation in the middle of last summer. As the current Indoor Champion Clive will now represent the Island at the forthcoming International Bowls Council championship which takes place in South Wales during April.

To cap a successful season Clive has been nominated in the Isle of Man Sport Awards as Veteran Sportsperson of the Year.

Members congratulate him on his nomination and wish him well for the international championships.
