ABOUT US

ABOUT LBIOM

The home of Lawn Bowls Isle of Man is located at Onchan Pleasure Park in front of the Boating Lake. The club is the only 'lawn bowling' club on the Island, which is predominantly a crown green bowling environment.

Established in 1977 and officially opened by the Chairman of the Onchan Commissioners in that year. The Club should have been opened in 1976, however too much fertiliser was put on the lawn causing the green to burn and was unplayable until the following season.

New players will be made most welcome regardless of experience and ability. We can lend you a set of bowls until such times as you get your own. The informal nature of our meetings make it ideal for the novice bowler to learn the ropes. Our more experienced bowlers will be happy to provide you with basic tuition on the skills of the game.

Bowls is a sport that can be played by all age groups and men and women can play and compete together. It provides gentle anaerobic exercise but do not underestimate its contribution to your overall fitness and well being. It also provides many social benefits and an opportunity to make new friends. If you are new to the Island then it is an excellent way to integrate into the community.

Bowls compared to other sports is relatively inexpensive, the basic equipment you need is a set of bowls (which can be bought second hand and last a lifetime) and a pair of heelless flat shoes. Club fees for this year are £20 (new members can enjoy their first season FREE), this includes all league and friendly competitions, plus you will need an annual season ticket from Onchan District Commissioners (bought through us) which will allow you to use both the flat and crown greens. Onchan District Commissioners have set their following prices for the 2024 season tickets: Adults - £75, Seniors - £60, Juniors - £20 for the full season. Great value!

Why not come along to any of our Club meetings and try our sport, you may be surprised at how enjoyable it is, just make yourself known to any of our players or contact our Secretary for further information: secretary@lawnbowlsiom.com

WHERE CAN I TRY OR PLAY BOWLS?

Bowls is a popular sport on the Island, however we are the only lawn bowls club on the Island. During the summer months the game can be played at the home of lawn bowls on the Island in Onchan Pleasure Park. During the winter, the game can be played indoors at the National Sport Centre. There is a separate association that is responsible for leagues and competitions indoor.

Lawn bowls is the internationally recognised version of the sport. We welcome anyone wishing give it a go to contact our secretary or come along to one of our open days or weekend roll ups.

IS LAWN BOWLS AN EXPENSIVE SPORT?

No, bowls can be a very good value for money. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes, trainers would do, and a set of bowls. Comfortable clothing or sports gear is all you need besides this. The days of posh 'whites', ties and blazers are a thing of the past and not required. We do like to have members wear a club shirt on competition days including championship finals days, which can be purchased from a local clothing company, but this is not imposed, particularly for new members. Second hand bowls can be picked up relatively cheaply, and we have bowls that we can loan to get you started. All other equipment, such as jacks and mats are available from the club to use.

WHO CAN I CONTACT FOR COACHING OR TIPS?

We have seven qualified coaches in the club, all who have vast experience both locally and internationally. Visit our contact page for a list of our current coaches.
