LEGG & MADDOCKS SWEEP TO VICTORY IN RAMSEY PAIRS

There was a strong turn out for the Ramsey Pairs competition at the Tynwald Day weekend and with a number of members showing some good form of late the field was wide open. Amongst the pairings there were a number of interesting combinations including the President, Phil Watterson drawn with his wife Anne who was making her first competitive return to the green after a back injury that had kept her out of the sport for over 3 months. Also drawn together was Phil Smith and Sean Scott smartly attired in sartorial elegance whilst all other members wore their traditional club shirts. With 4 rounds of matches made from a random draw using the 3-2-1 method of scoring (3 points for shot bowl, 2 for second and 1 for third) the level of scoring and progress in the competition can change quite dramatically. Making the running in the early rounds were the pairings of Mike Moyer & Mark McGreal alongside Karen Slack & Bernice McGreal who were playing some superb bowls in the excellent conditions. Also making her debut in a major Club competition was Lilly-Anne Scott using some colourful new bowls acquired with the aid of the Manx Lottery Trust playing with Clive McGreal. With both parents also involved in the competition it was also a battle for who would earn the bragging rights for the best placed finish of the Scott household. Despite some close run matches in the final round it was the steady partnership of Marilyn Legg and Eric Maddocks who triumphed on the day winning each of their games and amassing a comfortable winning margin over the eventual runners up being Lilly-Anne Scott and Clive McGreal. Members of the public including juniors wishing to come and try their hand at the sport can have the opportunity next Saturday (13th July) as part of the annual Onchan Fayre activities starting from midday onwards.
