LAWN BOWLS ISLE OF MAN
Whilst the season has been underway for a few weeks the Official Opening of the green was conducted on Saturday by the new Chairperson of Onchan Commissioners, Catherine Williams rolling the “first bowl” closely followed by visiting international Daphne Arthur-Almond from the Falkland Islands making a guest appearance.
With good weather forecast the membership were out in force for the first competition of the season being the popular Yardstick Cup. It was also the first competition for the juniors in the club who competed on equal terms with their seniors and put in a good display of bowling for their tender years, Well done to William, John, Joseph and Katie who will, no doubt, keep the senior members looking over their shoulders.
With a very healthy entry for the event the green was set up with 8 rinks which presented some challenging lines and strange outcomes on a number of ends. However, the standard of bowling during the afternoon was pretty impressive given the early stage of the season. With so many close matches throughout the round robin format of the competition there were a number of pairs in contention right up to the final end of the event.
Indeed it was a good afternoon for the Lenton household with Pat and partner Phil Smith taking 3rd place followed by Gary Lenton and partner Anne Watterson finishing as runner’s up just a few shots behind the eventual winners Dee Lewis and Clive McGreal.
The President, Pam Makin presented the Cup to the winners and congratulated the juniors on their performance and also thanked all those for contributing to the buffet which capped off a thoroughly enjoyable opening day.
